Five miles east: the run from Thousand Oaks to Agoura Hills
Agoura Hills is about 5 miles from Thousand Oaks by road, one of our shortest runs: east on the 101, over the Los Angeles County line and through Westlake Village. A short run still depends on what the freeway is doing, so we give you the window on the call, along with the quote.
The exits that serve the town include Kanan Road, exit 36, and Chesebro Road, with Reyes Adobe Road to the west and Liberty Canyon Road, exit 34, to the east. Tell us which way you were driving and the exit behind you, or the street and cross street; a truck on the wrong side of the 101 loses time at the next interchange.
Crossing the county line changes more than the signs. The Sheriff's station and the CHP office that handle a crash or order a tow here work the Los Angeles County side, so the numbers in the rules section below differ from the ones on our Thousand Oaks pages.
Kanan Road, two trailheads and the wildlife crossing in Agoura Hills
Kanan Road is the town's way to the coast. From the 101 to Pacific Coast Highway it is signed County Route N9 for 12.5 miles; it climbs to Mulholland Highway, then becomes Kanan Dume Road for the drop into Malibu. Two park-service lots hold cars all day. South of the freeway, Paramount Ranch, at 2903 Cornell Road off Kanan Road by Cornell Way, has ample parking; the Woolsey Fire destroyed much of its Western Town in November 2018. North of the freeway, the Cheeseboro Canyon trailhead is about a mile up Chesebro Road, at 5792 Chesebro Road: an unpaved lot open from 8 a.m. to sunset, no water, and parking outside the gate when it is shut. A car that baked there all day is a dead-battery or lockout call as often as a tow.
Just west of Liberty Canyon Road, the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing now spans the 101. Caltrans finished the bridge over the freeway in June 2025, and the second stage, over Agoura Road, runs through 2026, with the opening set for December 2, 2026. Agoura Road under it closed on weekdays from late April to July 1, and Caltrans posted a full closure there through September 1, 2026, so if your route crosses it, say so on the call.
Los Angeles County agencies and Agoura Hills' own vehicle rules
Agoura Hills contracts its policing to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, and its deputies work from the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station on Agoura Road, the same station that serves Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Malibu and Westlake Village. On the 101, crashes and freeway tows are the CHP's West Valley Area, based in Woodland Hills - not the Moorpark Area that patrols the freeway on the Ventura County side.

When a car is missing from an Agoura Hills street or lot, the Lost Hills station is the first call. Deputies keep a record of the tows they order, and a private-property tow reaches them too: under Vehicle Code 22658 the lot owner has one hour from authorizing the tow to notify local law enforcement. If you reach the tow truck before it pulls off the lot, the car must be handed back.
The city's own rules are about size. A commercial vehicle with an unladen weight of 11,000 pounds or more may not park on a public street between 2 and 6 a.m., pickups under 22 feet long and 84 inches high excepted, and one that does may be removed under Vehicle Code 22651. The city issues oversized-vehicle permits in 24-hour increments, for no longer than two days to one applicant at their residence in any 30-day period, requested at least 24 hours ahead.
The right truck for an Agoura Hills tow, and how it is priced

A two-wheel-drive sedan goes on the wheel-lift; an all-wheel-drive or electric car gets a flatbed ride with all four wheels up, and so does a motorcycle or anything lowered or damaged. Call the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Malibu/Lost Hills Station at (818) 878-1808, since Agoura Hills contracts with the Sheriff and deputies record the tows they order. Private-lot tows land there as well, because the property owner has to report each one within an hour. Is the 101 in Agoura Hills patrolled by the same CHP office as Thousand Oaks?
No. The 101 through Agoura Hills is the CHP's West Valley Area, based at 5825 De Soto Avenue in Woodland Hills, whose patrol area includes Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Westlake Village and Malibu; on the Ventura County side, Thousand Oaks included, it is the Moorpark Area. A tow the CHP orders to clear the freeway goes to whichever company is next on the CHP's rotation list.
Is the 101 closed for the wildlife crossing in Agoura Hills?
Not by day, for most of the project: Caltrans has kept freeway lanes open during the day and closed some at night. The bridge over the freeway, west of Liberty Canyon Road, was finished in June 2025, work over Agoura Road continues through 2026, and the crossing is set to open on December 2, 2026.
